We often get calls for a classic mold remediation job caused by water damage in one area of a home and these can be caused by a single incident, such as a burst pipe or a broken water heater. And sometimes, a home contains mold from multiple water sources.
That was the case with a Houston-area home we remediated: it had a leaking roof causing damage in a front room as well as water escaping from a bathroom tub into a wall below, and finally, old ductwork dripping into a ceiling. In this situation, the homeowners called because they saw water stains on a ceiling (from the roof leak above, it turns out).
They also noticed a funky smell in the bathroom. Our job was to locate and isolate all the moldy areas. With mold remediation, containment is essential. An affected area must be sealed off before materials are removed and/or treated. Otherwise, mold spores could move around to other places in a home or business.
We carefully removed damaged materials in sealed and sanitized bags. Again, we don’t want to spew any mold spores around to any other areas.
Also, while working, we are wearing protective suits and respirators. We don’t want any mold spores on our clothing or in our lungs. Remember, the primary problem with mold is it can cause respiratory problems and other illnesses in people.
Green Star Eco Services uses a proprietary, environmentally friendly antimicrobial solution to kill mold and lessen the chance of new mold. The spray treatment is conducted in a contained space with negative pressure. We also use industrial-grade air scrubbers and dehumidifiers to clean and dry out the space after the spraying.
“Mold remediation in its basic and simplest form is it’s a controlled demolition to get to the source,” said Marc Patel, owner of Green Star Eco Services. “A very controlled demolition. We have to contain our environment. We operate under a negative pressure to keep all the nasty stuff inside one area.”
The next steps are properly sanitizing the area with the antimicrobial solution and restoring air quality to safe levels. The air is tested during an inspection by a mold assessor.
“At the end of the day, mold remediation is all about air quality. That’s our big thing: to end up with an environment that we can walk into a few days after we got done taking out a lot of mold and we’re in here talking and breathing. It’s clean,” Patel said.
